Social media allows anyone with internet access to connect with other people and publish their own content. Through it, we receive a wealth of information and interaction that allows us to keep up important relationships and get things done.

However, for people with a disability such as a hearing, sight or mobility impairment, social media websites and applications have their own barriers.

Governments are toughening up on public sector web accessibility

State and Federal Governments around the globe are toughening up on public sector web accessibility. The latest case is the Alaskan Juneau School District, which felt the wrath of that state’s Government because of a complaint from the public that their websites aren’t inclusive for all needs.

After receiving the disability discrimination complaint, Alaskan authorities undertook a rigorous investigation and found out that ten other schools, educational groups, and institutions (including the Montana School for the Deaf and blind) also had accessibility issues on their websites.

New updates by Twitter client app Twitterrific enhance accessibility for vision impaired users

Twitterrific, a Mac OS X and iOS client for the social networking site Twitter, has launched a host of new and improved accessibility features for people who are blind or vision impaired for its app update yesterday.  This recent update has seen a vast improvement in the app’s use of VoiceOver and image sharing.

Social media for those with a disability gets 2016 update

The ground-breaking 2012 ‘SociAbility’ review into social media for those with a disability has had a much anticipated update. The Media Access Australia website now includes important new information on the varying accessibility challenges and practical fixes across all popular social channels. Project leader Dr Scott Hollier believes that it is destined to be the go-to resource on social media for people with a disability and those who provide care, support and advice.

Accessibility in the cloud – benefits, issues and trends
