After many years advocating for digital inclusion along with auditing and remediating web and digital content so that it is accessible to people with disability, Media Access Australia is widening our scope of work.

Instead of just concentrating on promoting inclusion through technology for those with a vision, hearing, cognitive or mobility disability, the charity is now going to focus on inclusion through participation, for people of all abilities, backgrounds and social circumstances.

Digital Accessibility Services

Media Access Australia strives for accessibility and inclusion through technology. We’re Australia’s only independent Not-For-Profit organisation dedicated to increasing access to websites, digital media and technology for people with vision, hearing and cognitive disabilities, as well as older Australians, those from non-English-speaking backgrounds, and people with varying levels of education and literacy.

ABC seeks feedback on iview audio description trial

Australia’s first disability-focused tech accelerator launched

Australia’s first disability-focused impact accelerator, Remarkable, held its official launch event on 31 March at the University of Sydney. The Remarkable Accelerator program aims to work with inclusive start-up companies by using technology in innovative ways to improve the lives of people with disabilities.

DIY 3D-printed tactile maps

The expansion of affordable 3D printing into the mainstream has meant that people needing tactile versions of objects or printed material can access them more easily.

Early adopters of the technology have been schools where diagrams, images and other visual information can be printed out for vision impaired students.

Snapchat adds closed captioning support for Discover videos

Social messaging app Snapchat has added closed captioning support for videos shared within its Discover section, allowing major publishers to share accessible video content with broad communities of smartphone users without access to audio content.

TV in UK exceeds captioning and audio description quotas

Television channels in the UK continue to deliver access at much higher levels than the regulated quotas. All channels are covered by the access requirements and any exemptions are generally due to very low levels of audience share.

Australian Network on Disability seeks participants for Banking Accessibility Survey 2016

The Australian Network on Disability (AND) is conducting a new survey to extend its research into the accessibility of banking services, encouraging people living with disability to participate. The survey aims to gain a stronger understanding of user experience when paying for goods and services.

Facebook introduces automatic alternative text feature to iOS app

Facebook has launched a feature based on image recognition to provide Automatic Alternative Text (AAT) for photos uploaded to the social media service.
