Game accessibility enthusiasts will converge today in Boston, Massachusetts to attend the annual Game Accessibility Day, held as part of the Games for Health Conference 2010.

As the popularity of games continues to soar, interest in game accessibility also grows. For the third year in a row, Game Accessibility Day will give people a chance to share research and development and practical experience in game accessibility, and network with others whose passion lies in this area.

London 2012 Olympics supports access for online video

The story of Wenlock and Mandeville - the official London 2012 Olympic and Paralympics mascots respectively -  can now be viewed online as an audio described YouTube video.

The audio described YouTube video tells the story of the creation of Wenlock and Mandeville. Most of the story is visual in nature, with little dialogue between the characters, making audio description crucial for those who are blind or vision impaired.

This is the first time that we have seen online promotional material audio described by an Olympic committee, and it bodes well for access to the London 2012 Olympics.

Office 2010 introduces inbuilt Accessibility Checker

The new Microsoft Office 2010, due for release to the general public next month, includes an inbuilt Accessibility Checker that tests common accessibility problems in Word, Excel and PowerPoint documents, and assists the user to correct these issues.

Leading e-textbook provider increases accessibility features

VitalSource Technologies Inc ., a company located in the US that specialises in physical and digital services in the book industry, has just announced that the new release for its VitalSource Bookshelf e-textbook platform will include major accessibility updates.

VitalSource Bookshelf is primarily for the education sector, providing access to the best-known higher education textbooks, study guides and classics. The release, which makes the application more usable for students with disabilities, contains extensive internal feature and function enhancements, as well as support for third-party screen-reader applications.
