New Safari 5 web browser supports HTML 5 closed captions

Apple has released the new Safari 5 web browser which supports HTML 5 closed caption video, a full-screen video playback mode and a 130% speed increase.

The new version of the browser, released at its annual World Wide Developer Conference (WWDC) in San Francisco, has focused on the delivery of many of the new features found  in the new W3C HTML 5 standard, and its support of improved multimedia content. This means that new and emerging web technologies will be able to feature closed captions in the Safari web browser and playback in a TV-style full screen mode.  The new version of Safari is available for both Mac OS and Windows from the Apple Download website

New iPhone 4, new accessibility features

Apple unveiled even more accessibility features for iPhone users when earlier today Steve Jobs revealed the much anticipated iPhone 4 in his keynote address at the Worldwide Developers Conference, and provided further details about updates to the soon-to-be-released operating system.

The updated operating system, renamed iOS 4 today, has additional accessibility features that add to the already impressive suite of accessibility features on the iPhone and iPad.

Jetstar to rent out iPads for inflight entertainment

Jetstar has confirmed that it will be running a trial program that allows passengers to rent an iPad for $10. The iPad will contain movies, TV shows, e-books, games and music, and provide great potential for inflight accessible media.

The iPad, which has a number of accessible features including the VoiceOver screen reader and captioned video, means that people who are blind or vision impaired could have the e-books read out to them during the flight, and people who are hearing impaired could potentially have closed captions available on the movies and TV shows. However, Jetstar is yet to confirm if the video will be captioned.

Emirates' inflight entertainment wins award

Emirates has won the World’s Best Airline Inflight Entertainment award for the sixth year running at the 2010 Skytrax World Airline Awards.  

In 2009-2010 Emirates selected movies from over 15 countries that were available in over 20 languages, as well as many with the option to choose closed captions for the Deaf and hearing impaired.

The airline's groundbreaking audio and video-on-demand system, ice (information, communications and entertainment), is available on over 80 per cent of the Emirates fleet and offers a staggering choice of up to 1,200 channels of entertainment including 230 movies from around the world.
