Spanish website provides accessibility reviews of smartphones

Spanish organisation Fundación ONCE has created a website, Amóvil, designed to provide accessibility reviews of popular European smartphones.

Amóvil is a Spain-based initiative designed to help people with disabilities find a smartphone that suits their needs and preferences. It allows users to search for a particular model of smartphone and then read reviews about the device and its accessibility features.

The search function allows users to search by accessibility type, such as features only applicable to blind users, hard of hearing users and low vision users.

Captioned World Cup

Local coverage of the world’s largest sporting event in the world, the FIFA World Cup starting in Brazil on 12 June (13 June Australian time), features many hundreds of hours of captioned content over the month-long competition.

Broadcaster SBS has the rights to the World Cup and will be showing matches on both SBS1 and SBS2 with live coverage, repeats and highlights packages. Most coverage is captioned, with the exception of some of the games that are entirely within the Midnight to 6am exclusion zone. However, when those matches are repeated later in the day, they will appear with captions. The captioned coverage also includes two feature programs, The Full Brazilian and the 2014 FIFA World Cup Show.

ACCAN calls for new access legislation

The Australian Communications Consumer Action Network (ACCAN) has called for new legislation to ensure the accessibility of online content and digital technology.

The new legislation would be based America’s 21st Century Communications and Video Accessibility Act (CVAA), which was passed in 2010. The most comprehensive access legislation in the world, it makes it mandatory for programs captioned for television broadcast to be captioned when distributed over the internet. Digital television receivers, smartphones, tablets and other devices must also be able to receive captions and play audio description.
