Accessibility and usability concerns voiced over ICT in National Curriculum

no

The question of whether to embed ICT (Information and Communication Technology) across all subjects in the National Curriculum, or include it as a separate subject, was put to members of the Leadership Forum focusing on the National Curriculum and ICT over the Easter school holidays. It was held as part of the Australian Council for Computers in Education ‘Digital Diversity’ Conference in Melbourne from 6-10 April 2010.

Representatives included ICT professionals, policy makers, Department of Education and other sector representatives and ACARA (Australian Curriculum Assessment and Reporting Authority) representative Lynn Redley. MAA’s Education team was also present. Focus groups addressed questions of readability, implementation potential, teacher professional development and the worth of implementation across all curriculums.

Specialist masters programs for access reflect a fast growing industry

no

The University of Surrey in the UK has two masters programs dedicated to a qualification that prepares graduates to work in both the practical and research areas of the captioning and audio description industries. Both programs are unique globally, and train students in the latest practical approaches, combined with a mandatory research project.

The Master of Monolingual Subtitling and Audio Description and Master of Translation in Audiovisual Translation programs are both offered by the Translation Studies department. Common units include Audiovisual Translation Issues, Intralingual Audiovisual Translation (Subtitling for the Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing: SDH) and Audio Description. The translation issues unit looks at the various forms of audiovisual translation such as subtitling, dubbing, voice-over and audio description, and how they have developed in recent times with the overall relationship to translation.

Show on home page

A three-year project funded by the National Science Program, and carried out by the National Center for Accessible Media (NCAM), has developed standards for accessible software for use in the mathematics and science curriculum.

Underpinning the project’s recommendations was the need to provide captioning on multimedia presentations for Deaf and hearing impaired students, and audio description on multimedia presentations for the blind and vision impaired. Additional recommendations for the blind and vision impaired included the need to provide printable images and screen layouts, and text alternatives for static graphs and images that represented educational information.
