DVDs celebrate Deaf students' success

no

Griffith University has produced a set of four DVDs, Signs of Success, which look at the experiences and achievements of Deaf and hearing impaired students at the university, and the support services provided to them there.

The DVDs feature interviews with students who talk about how they came to study at university, and how they fared after completing their studies. There are also interviews with service providers who work for the university’s Deaf and Hard of Hearing Student Support Program (DSSP), and a documentary on the ‘Celebrating Success’ event held in 2006.

The DVDs have been captioned with funding from the Department of Families, Housing, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs’ Captioning Grant, which is administered by Media Access Australia.

Macquarie University Accessibility Unit in the spotlight

no

The work of Macquarie University’s Accessibility Unit has been featured in an article, ‘Clearing a path to learning’, in the Sydney Morning Herald this week. The article outlines the wide range of support available to students with disabilities, including those with sensory impairment, provided by the unit.

The Accessibility Unit was developed in 2004 to provide students with a disability with the support needed to not only ‘pass’ a degree, but to be given the chance to excel. Each student is paired with an education developer who develops an individual action plan and liaises with relevant lecturers and tutors on the student’s behalf.

Support for students who are blind or have low vision includes the use of screen readers, screen reading software and the ‘DAISY’ digital talking book, which allows the user to navigate through a book’s contents as well as hearing it.
