Sky News channel commences regular captioning from 1 October

Subscription news channel Sky News has announced that it will start regular captioning from Friday, 1 October 2010 on its program PM Agenda, a daily political news program.

It has also been announced that the captioning service will be extended to the Sky News Business Channel (but not date has been released).

Sky News uses Ai-Media to live caption its programs and provided live caption coverage of the Federal election last Saturday, 21 August.

Subscription news channel Sky News launches a live captioning service with Saturday night’s election coverage from 6pm to 10pm.

The captioning is provided by AI Media and the service is a preview of a soon to be launched regular captioning service on Sky News. 

Sky News is available through FOXTEL and AUSTAR.

NZ announces TV audio description trial

NZ On Air, the government agency that funds captioning services in New Zealand, has announced a NZ$500,000 audio description trial on digital television in 2011.

This trial will provide a closed audio description service, and new Freeview integrated sets and Freeview digital set-top boxes will incorporate the ability to decode and play the audio description (which will be on a second audio channel). Some older Freeview sets may be able to be upgraded.   

According to NZ On Air, the initial service is expected to be on TV One and consist of imported description. Description of local programming has been identified as a future priority.
