The PointFinder accessible navigation aid for blind and vision-impaired people was launched on the Android platform in 2014, after some advice and testing from Media Access Australia. Now this very useful app is available for iOS users too.

With PointFinder, blind and vision impaired device users can save GPS coordinates for Points of Interest (POI). The user can use PointFinder's periodic Text-To-Speech and audio compass features to find the POI, and if navigation to the general area of the POI is required (via roads or public transport), PointFinder can be used to open Google Maps to provide navigation to the POI that the user nominates.

The app’s interface is high-contrast with large, easy to touch buttons, and PointFinder's audio compass is a continuous sound effect with a pitch that gets lower as the user turns to face the POI.

The creator of this accessible navigation app is Voon-Li Chung of PicoSpace Pty Ltd and PointFinder was the result of a face-to-face meeting between Voon-Li and Dr Scott Hollier, who is Media Access Australia’s Specialist Advisor, Digital Accessibility.

The Android version of PointFinder is available from the Google Play store. The new version was launched in August 2016 and incorporates all of the main features of the Android original. You can get PointFinder for iOS from the iTunes store.
