Engaging educational TV that is 100% captioned is a boon for students with diverse learning needs. Discovery Kids on FOXTEL, launched last week, delivers on the promise of accessibility and fun educational programming for children.

Discovery Networks’ new addition, Discovery Kids, incorporates a breadth of programming with captioned content on some of the Key Learning Areas of the Primary School Curriculum such Science and Technology; Personal Development, Health and Physical Education; Creative Arts and Human Society and Its Environment.

Topics and areas of focus include Australian flora and fauna, Lifecycles, Space and solar systems, Human body, Earth and its environment, Power and energy sources, Asian studies, Australian History and an Aboriginal perspective.

An example of a fun program teaching children about caring for animals and the responsibilities it entails is Pet School, which screens on Tuesdays at 5.30pm. Refer to the FOXTEL online program guide screening times for the range of programs on offer.

Multimodal, digital and media texts feature in the Content Descriptions in the Australian Curriculum, and access to rich and fun captioned content like the offerings of Discovery Kids is a positive way forward for young learners in Australian schools.
