A partnership between Ai-Media and Discovery Kids will culminate in the launching of Australia’s only television channel dedicated to primary school education with 100% captioned content, on Foxtel on 3 November.

A new addition to the Discovery Networks portfolio, Discovery Kids will target primary school students with fun and educational material. The partnership with Ai-Media to provide full captioning services is backed by research that “viewing video content with captioning can help strengthen literacy skills and vocabulary development in young readers”.

Mandy Pattinson, Discovery Network’s Executive Vice President and General Manager, NZ and the Pacific Islands, is thrilled by the initiative. “With programming pillars inspired by key learning areas of the Australian Curriculum, Discovery Kids stimulates learning and imagination for a new generation of audiences, and provides a safe and enriching environment that parents can trust.”

Anne McGrath, Media Access Australia’s Education Manager, said, “The link between literacy and the use of captions is a strong one, and the primary school years are vital for children’s literacy acquisition and consolidation. A dedicated television channel for primary school children with 100% captioning is a wonderful pathway to exciting literacy opportunities for students with diverse learning needs.”
