Captioned movies allow people who are Deaf or hearing impaired to watch movies through a personal viewing screen that sits in the seat’s cup holder. Audio description, for the blind or vision impaired, is delivered via a personal receiver and either ear buds or over-the-head earphones.
Four of the new cinema locations are in suburban Sydney: Macquarie, Miranda, Campbelltown and Shellharbour. The other three are in Queensland and are Mackay City, Mackay North and Rockhampton. Accessible movie session times for all these locations can be found on Event Cinemas’ website by searching under the ‘Times and Tickets’ menu item for either closed captions or audio description. Sessions are also advertised in local newspapers.
The commencement of accessible cinema at these locations is part of the Federal Government’s Cinema Access Implementation Plan which will see every Hoyts, Event, Village and Reading location begin accessible movie sessions by the end of 2014.
You can find other accessible movie locations on our Find Accessible Cinema page and learn more about the in-cinema experience, including how to use the equipment.
