Google launches Chrome Web Store and Google eBookstore

Google has released a number of new services including the Google eBookstore and Chrome Web Store. Both have possibilities for increased accessibility for people with a disability.

The eBookstore offers Google eBooks in a format that works with iBooks on the iPad, iPhone and iPod touch, and therefore can utilise the existing accessibility features of these devices. The Google eBookstore is an online bookstore that allows you to browse and search through what Google claims is the largest eBook collection in the world.

12 Days of Access - Dr Scott Hollier celebrates the improved affordability of accessible computing

The festivities at Media Access Australia are in full swing with the fourth instalment in the 12 Days of Access and an interview with Dr Scott Hollier.

Scott has been with Media Access Australia for over two years, and earlier in 2010 moved back to Western Australia where he is a Project Manager involved in some very exciting projects.

US committee for captions and audio description on the Internet appointed

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has announced the membership of its new Video Programming and Emergency Access Advisory Committee (VPEAAC). The committee, which will include representatives from the TV industry, new media companies and disability advocacy groups, will help guide FCC policy regarding captions and audio description for video programming and emergency announcements delivered over the Internet.

The creation of the committee follows President Obama’s signing of the 21st Century Communications and Video Accessibility Act on October 8. The provisions of the act include a requirement that television content made available via the Internet must have captions and some audio description.

BSI web accessibility code of practice formally launched

The British Standards Institute (BSI) has formally launched a new code of practice outlining a process organisations can follow to improve the accessibility of their web products.

The code, BS 8878:2010 Web accessibility, is a non-technical document intended for professionals responsible for policies relating to web products (including websites and cloud applications) such as chief executive officers, managing directors, principals and ICT managers.
