Disney being sued over lack of accessibility

Three women in the United States are suing Disney for discrimination against those who are blind or vision impaired.

According to the press release about the class action suit, the plaintiffs are claiming that the parks themselves are discriminatory against people who are blind and vision impaired by “refusing to reasonably accommodate the needs of guests with guide dogs, refusing to provide functional audio technology, refusing to provide Braille menus, schedules and maps, and more”.

American Foundation for the Blind announces 2011 Access Award winners

Walt Disney, Accessible Twitter, Lexmark and CBS TV network were yesterday named the winners of the American Foundation for the Blind’s 2011 Access Awards.

The annual awards honour individuals and organisations that are significantly improving accessibility to their products and services for people who are blind and vision impaired.

The organisations were awarded for their “bold and successful strides toward creating new standards of accessibility and a better quality of life for people who are blind or visually impaired," said Carl Augusto, President and CEO of the American Foundation for the Blind.

Previous award recipients of the Access Awards include Apple, Inc., Google, and Canon USA, Inc.

Competition on accessible web development open to all

Web developers from all over the world can now participate in AIR-Interactive 2011, a competition that focuses on the development of accessible websites.

The competition requires you to either create an accessible website for a nonprofit arts community, artist or musician, or critique the accessibility of select websites and redesign one page for accessibility. Prizes will be awarded at the opening of the SXSW Music and Film Interactive Festival on 11 March.

AIR-Interactive has gone global after web developers from all over the world expressed an interest in participating. The competition was previously available only to Texan web developers.

SBS makes ‘Immigration Nation’ available online with captions

The first two episodes of the Australian history series Immigration Nation can now be viewed with captions on the SBS website, viewed captions on the SBS website, and episode 3 will follow shortly. This is the first time that SBS’s online content has been captioned.

The ABC’s iView remains the only online ‘catch-up’ video service in Australia which carries a significant amount of captioning, with all prime-time programs from ABC1 and ABC2 captioned on iView.
