The company behind the popular smartphone BlackBerry, Research in Motion, has released its first screen reader application for the BlackBerry operating system.

The screen reader turns visual information into synthetic voice, allowing blind or vision impaired users access to information such as text and menu items. The free to download BlackBerry screen reader app works with core applications, including emails, instant messaging and calendar.

The speed, pitch and volume of the screen reader’s synthetic voice can also be adjusted to a comfortable level for the user.

Previously, screen reader software for BlackBerry smartphones was available through third-party sources, such as Humanware’s screen reader Oratio available to American users for $US449.

The BlackBerry screen reader is currently available for the Curve 9350, 9360 and 9370 models of the smartphone.

You can find more information and tips and tricks for the BlackBerry screen reader on their blog site.
