Australia’s four major cinema chains, Hoyts, Event, Village and Reading, have announced their plan for the rollout of accessible cinema locations to June 2012. This rollout will see the installation of audio description in a number locations which currently only have captions.

There will be 27 new locations across NSW, Queensland and Victoria, bringing both closed captions and audio description to a total of 50 screens.

A further 13 locations in NSW, Queensland, South Australia and Western Australia will have their current access increased by the inclusion of audio description. The Fidelio system has now met Standards Australia certification, which will allow the cinemas to commence installation across their complexes to accommodate blind and vision impaired movie fans.

This is the second year of the Cinema Access Implementation Plan, co-signed by the cinemas and the Department of Families, Housing, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs, to oversee closed captions and audio description programs commence at all locations of the four major cinema chains.

By the end of 2014 a minimum of 242 screens across 132 locations will offer accessible movies for people with sensory disabilities and their families and friends.
