- The ACMA has issued a consultation paper which explains its approach when drafting the captioning standard. In your submission, you should focus on the questions that are asked in this paper.
- Ensure that the points you make are relevant to the issues that the ACMA is asking you to comment on. Do you feel the approach they are proposing is the correct one, and will ensure caption quality?
- If you think caption quality needs to be improved, try to make practical suggestions about what the ACMA could do to achieve this.
- State your interest in these issues, and why they are important to you.
- Back up the points you make with evidence whenever possible. If you feel there are problems with captions on Australian television, try to give concrete examples.
- Don’t feel that you have to respond to all the questions in the consultation paper. Just comment about things you think are important.
The consultation paper and the draft Broadcasting Services (Television Captioning) Standard 2013 can be downloaded from the Captioning quality page on the ACMA’s website.
Submissions can be made by mail or email. Be aware that the ACMA usually publishes all submissions, and prefers them not to be confidential. However, it will consider requests that some information in them be kept confidential.
The closing date for submissions is 22 January 2013.
Media Access Australia’s submission will be published on our website in the coming weeks.
