Proloquo2Go, an app for iOS-devices such as the iPhone, is helping parents support the educational needs of children with autism or apraxia by overcoming communication barriers.

The app aims to support the augmentative and alternative communication process for children, which can work by supplementing existing speech or replacing speech entirely. This helps to improve social interaction, school performance and improve their sense of self-worth. Electronic aids use picture symbols, letters, and/or words and phrases to create messages.

New community-based website for blind and vision impaired iOS users

AppleVis is a new community-based website that focuses on news, app information and guides for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch owners who are blind or vision impaired.

The website was created in response to a growing demand seen on the VIPhone mailing list for a website for sharing information about accessible iOS applications.

The website uses a community-focused approach, asking users to provide information about the accessibility of an iOS application – good or bad. Users can also contribute guides, tutorials, tips or news items to help users get the most out of the iOS devices.

New low-cost DAISY reader app for the iPhone

The Association for the Blind of Western Australia and Curtin University of Technology have announced that their new DAISY reader application for the Apple iPhone, DaisyWorm is now available for $4.99.

DAISY is a talking book format that allows you to navigate through an audio book in different ways such as hierarchically (by chapter or heading) or using other forms of content such as images. The new DaisyWorm application supports DAISY 2.02 and DAISY 3 formats and will play non-protected full audio and full text/full audio DAISY books on the iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch.
