Individuals and organisations alike are invited to make nominations for the awards, which are run by BT and AbilityNet  and acknowledge excellence within the UK in the area of each award.

New standard helps preserve captions on catch-up TV

The Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE) has made freely available a standard that will enable captions from broadcast TV and broadband video programming to work together – or to interoperate.

The official description for the SMPTE ST 2052-1:2010 standard, called Time Text Format (SMPTE-TT) states:

New closed captioned cinema location in Sydney

Event Cinemas Top Ryde City is the latest cinema complex to introduce closed caption technology to its sessions.

Using the CaptiView system, Top Ryde City is the first Event Cinemas location in NSW to roll out the new technology, allowing patrons to privately view captions with the latest release movies, every day of the week.

US company releases new 3D captioning tool

US company specialising in captioning and subtitling, CPC, has announced that its MacCaption software now has the ability to create 3D captions.

The software upgrade allows users to easily create 3D captions, specifying 3D depth for individual captions, and also allows pre-existing caption files to be converted to 3D.

While the technical specification for 3D closed captions is still to be finalised, CPC’s press release notes that, when it is, “MacCaption will be upgradeable to support it”.
