Round-up of the M-Enabling Australasia 2013 Conference

Experts in mobile technology, accessibility, industry representatives, government and disability and consumer advocacy groups last week came together to discuss challenges and trends in mobile technology and accessibility at the M-Enabling Australasia 2013 Conference. Held at the Australian Technology Park in Sydney, the conference was organised by the Australian Communications Consumer Action Network (ACCAN) in joint partnership with Telstra.

International speakers including Karen Peltz Strauss, Deputy Bureau Chief of the Consumer and Governmental Affairs Bureau at the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) in the US, and President and Executive Director of The Global Initiative for Inclusive ICT (G3ict) Axel Leblois, discussed how accessibility is currently driving innovation in legislation and mobile technology.

The National Transition Strategy – is it on track?

The Australian government has been working hard over the past two years to ensure that all Federal and most state government websites meet the minimal Level 'A' requirement of the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.0 by the end of this year. With six months to go, it's a good time to reflect on the progress to date and identify some potential issues that need to be addressed to help ensure the government reaches its target.

Australian policy and legislation

Government websites

The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) been instrumental in providing concrete standards to support government web accessibility. The W3C released the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG), with the release of version 1.0 in 1999 and version 2.0 in 2008.

In February 2010, the Commonwealth Government committed to making all its websites compliant with WCAG 2.0 by 2015.
