Highlights of the program include the addition of live captioning of the digital education program via video conferencing for students and an audio description smartphone app for patrons attending performances. The Opera House is also working on captioning its past Talks and Ideas videos on its online video portal as well as future uploads.
Other services outlined in the Access Program media release include touch tours, autism-friendly performances and Auslan interpretation.
“This year’s Access Program includes many new and exciting opportunities for people with disabilities to engage with our world-class performances and activities. We work closely with disability organisations to ensure our access initiatives respond to the needs and expectations of the community,” said Sydney Opera House Accessibility Manager Jenny Spinak.
Ms Spinak won the inaugural Captioning Award for Entertainment, Cinema & the Arts in 2012 for her dedication to accessible arts programs at the Sydney Opera House. That dedication continues with the House’s 2014 Access Program.
The 2014 Access Program can be downloaded in PDF, large print and audio format from the Sydney Opera House website.
