Communication Services for the Deaf (CSD), a US not-for-profit organisation promoting access for Deaf and hearing impaired Americans, has been awarded US$14.9 million towards a project to improve access to Internet-based services for people who are Deaf and hearing impaired.

Project Endeavor’ will distribute equipment, provide broadband services and connect low-income Deaf and hearing impaired individuals to both broadband and technical assistance.

According to its website, Project Endeavor’s main goals are:

  • To launch a contact centre to qualify income-eligible Deaf and hearing impaired people for discounted high-speed Internet services
  • To establish public kiosks in community centres frequented by Deaf and hearing impaired people so they can access the Internet and become qualified for Project Endeavor
  • To provide technical and training assistance to these consumers so they can learn how to maximise their use of the Internet.

People who qualify for the discounted Internet packages will be able to search the Internet, watch videos, use remote interpreter or captioning services, look for jobs, learn new skills and connect with others.

As part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, the US Federal Government invested $275 million dollars to create new jobs, save existing jobs and to spur economic growth. CSD applied for and was awarded a portion of this funding for Project Endeavor.
