Universal access to telecommunications has long been touted as a requirement and right for Australian citizens. Now access to the internet and digital literacy are increasingly being recognised as integral for our community’s inclusion and ability to participate fully in social, economic and political life.
Media Access Australia Deputy CEO Natalie Collins will participate in a panel discussion exploring the relationship between internet access, digital literacy and human rights. In particular, Collins will discuss how these issues affect people with disabilities, older Australians, and those in remote communities including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
“For Deaf and hearing impaired people mobile phones and text messaging are vital for everyday communication and emergencies. Blind and vision impaired people use technology and the internet for almost everything,” said Collins.
“Affordable access to technology, the internet and digital literacy are fundamental for participation is today’s society. It is a human right.”
