Part of the FCC’s Accessibility and Innovation Initiative, the Chairman’s Advancement in Accessibility Awards (AAA) recognises the work of individuals, organisations, academics, companies, students and government agencies that give people with a disability greater access to technologies through innovation and design.
According to a statement by the FCC, the awards are given to those who have contributed to “assistive technologies introduced into the marketplace, the development of standards, and the implementation of best practices that foster accessibility”.
Categories include:
- Education: college/university
- Deaf-blind solutions
- Video programming device solutions
- Geo-location solutions
- Mobile apps
- Consumer empowerment information
- Civic participation solutions
The awards will be open for nominationbetween 31 May and 31 July 2012, and will be held later this year. To coincide with the AAA, the FCC will also display new accessible communications technologies from nominees and others in its Technology Experience Center throughout October.
