The long-awaited trial of audio description commences on ABC1 on Sunday, 5 August, with the first programs to be described including Grand Designs Revisited and the World War I drama Birdsong.

Other programs to be broadcast with audio description during the first week of the trial include Midsomer Murders, Monty Don’s Italian Gardens, Silent Witness, Taggart and Hustle. A schedule of described programs is available on the ABC’s website.

To hear the service, viewers will need to have an appropriate digital receiver. The Government has released a report on which TVs and set-top boxes available in Australia can access the audio description, which include Grundig, Panasonic, Sanyo, Sharp and Sony devices. The report also details how to turn audio description on using each device.

The trial will continue for 13 weeks, with an average of 2 hours of programs broadcast each evening between 5pm and midnight. While all the programs broadcast during the first week of the trial are British, it will also include locally produced programs.
