Arts Access Victoria has confirmed a three-year funding commitment by the City of Melbourne to support The Other Film Festival, Australia’s only disability film festival. City of Melbourne’s Arts and Culture Program has committed $45,000 per year to the festival for the next three years, a 12.5% increase over previous triennial funding for the festival.

Festival Director Rick Randall affirms that “The City of Melbourne Triennial Funding signifies an unequivocal expression of confidence in the Festival. This grant provides invaluable support for the festival to respond to the aspirations of people with a disability to participate in screen culture as creators and consumers.”

Councillor Jennifer Kanis, Chair, Future Melbourne (People and Creative City) acknowledges that The Other Film Festival has “become a highlight of our events calendar and the festival’s longevity is evidence of Melbourne’s passion for all-things-film. Everyone should have the opportunity to be part of the arts, regardless of ability, so we are proud to partner with an event that makes access to the arts a top priority. Participation in, and access to, the arts is integral to the wellbeing, creativity, diversity and innovation of Melbourne and the wider Victorian community.”

The Other Film Festival is a biennial disability film festival presented by Arts Access Victoria. The 5th Other Film Festival will take place in August 2012 and promises another bold exploration into the lived experience of disability with vibrant new cinema from Australia and around the world.

The Festival further extends its commitment to improving cinema and film festival access for all Victorians with a challenging series of industry forums and discussions. Film industry practitioners with a disability can also expect to benefit from the inaugural series of professional development workshops taking place at the Festival next year.
