IMAX Melbourne is seeking feedback from Deaf and hearing impaired cinema goers on its trial of the new Rear Window Captioning system. The cinema is inviting people to test out the new technology and answer a short survey on their experience.

An alternative to the CaptiView device currently in use, the Rear Window Captioning (RWC) system projects an LED display of captions onto a Perspex sheet that can be placed over the cinema screen, replicating the style of open captions. IMAX Melbourne Museum will be the first cinema to implement RWC outside North America.

The free sessions will be held from 19 to 29 January, with a variety of movies on offer. Places are limited so be sure to book your place in a session at least one business day ahead. To book, contact Hayley between 10am and 3pm from January 18 onwards on 03 9663 0200 or email: groupsales@imaxmelbourne.com.au.

An email confirmation will then be sent with your booking details. IMAX Melbourne Museum have requested that participants arrive approximately 15 minutes prior to their booked session. The theatre will follow up by emailing trial participants a survey to complete a few business days after they attend.

Before you book visit the IMAX Melbourne website for a list of films and session times during the trial period. Please have two preferences ready and let IMAX Melbourne know the date and time of the session you’d like to attend, along with how many people will be requiring Rear Window reflectors.

Committed to accessibility, the cinema anticipates that audio description for people who are blind and vision impaired will be available for most movies screened at IMAX within the first half of 2012.

If you can’t attend a session, see our comparison of current a cinema technologies.
