The South American nation of Colombia has begun a project in its capital, Bogota, to make cinema accessible for people with hearing or vision impairments.

Funded by the local government, the Accessible Cinema project uses specialised subtitles and headsets to make movies understandable for everyone.

People who are blind or vision impaired can use headsets to listen to audio description, which describes the visual elements on the screen, while people who are deaf or hearing impaired are offered captions that translate the entire soundtrack: dialogue, music and sound effects.

Six Spanish language movies are currently being adapted to the needs of those requiring captions and audio description, and will be shown in public libraries and cinemas throughout the city.
