As voice recognition technology advances so do the opportunities for making content accessible. On the anniversary of YouTube’s automated caption service, which allows users to send a YouTube clip to be automatically captioned before uploading it to their own channel, Google has announced improvements to the quality of the service.

Since YouTube’s automated caption service began:

  • People have watched videos with automatic captions more than 23 million times, and have automatically translated captions more than 7.6 million times.
  • The number of manually-created caption tracks has more than tripled thanks largely to automatic caption timing technology.
  • The error rate in the service’s speech recognition algorithms has recently been reduced by 20%.

The YouTube Global blog celebrates these advancements and looks to the future of accessible technology. Media Access Australia has a number of resources for people interested in creating captions and creating accessible content on the web in general.
