A blog post written by Mozilla’s Accessibility Quality Assurance Engineer, Marco Zehe, is being enthusiastically passed around by accessibility advocates via Twitter.

The blog post outlines the new features in accessibility for the upcoming release of Firefox 4.0:

  • improved speed for all web browsing, including interaction with access technology
  • support for new HTML5 elements
  • updated WAI-ARIA support in line with the latest version of the specification (WAI-ARIA Last Call Working Draft)
  • UI and keyboard changes

Many of the companies that develop web browsers will be releasing new versions of their browsers soon.  Internet Explorer 9 beta was released on 16 September and Media Access Australia’s quick hands-on review of Internet Explorer 9 Beta showed that accessibility support was mixed.

Currently, Firefox is the second most popular browser behind Internet Explorer, and recently statistics show that the use of Internet Explorer is on the decline, while Firefox remains steady.

You can read about the accessibility of current web browsers on the Media Access Australia website.
