Fix the Web began its first trial at the end of September and provides a simple way for web users with disabilities to report access issues they encounter.

Web users (‘the crowd’) can report access issues though Twitter, email or using an online form. Members of a pool of registered volunteers then find the correct contact (e.g. website owner or administrator) to pass on the details of the problem.

The official launch by digital inclusion charity Citizens Online is expected later this year. To date, 53 users have signed up to the trial, and 14 websites have been reported.

Earlier this year, Media Access Australia completed a six month trial of the AWARe project that was designed to make it easy for the online community to review the access of prominent websites, and discuss the issues with each other.

AWARe was also based on the principle of crowd sourcing. Every month, users could review a number of prominent websites against the 12 success criteria of the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.0. The aggregated results were then communicated to the relevant website owners by Media Access Australia, and used to open a dialogue about web accessibility on their website.

More information about how to produce and maintain accessible content on the web can be found in the online media section of the Media Access Australia website.
