Proloquo2Go, an app for iOS-devices such as the iPhone, is helping parents support the educational needs of children with autism or apraxia by overcoming communication barriers.

The app aims to support the augmentative and alternative communication process for children, which can work by supplementing existing speech or replacing speech entirely. This helps to improve social interaction, school performance and improve their sense of self-worth. Electronic aids use picture symbols, letters, and/or words and phrases to create messages.

Some assistive technology devices often retail at over $US10000 and while Proloquo2Go is expensive by iPhone standards at nearly $US200, it provides the additional benefits of having a familiar and intuitive feel and is an appealing alternative to lugging around a heavy and cumbersome assistive technology device.

Proloquo2Go is just one of many recent iPhone app releases that support the needs of people with disabilities. You can purchase Proloquo2go now from the Apple iTunes store. Further information on Proloquo2Go can be found on the CNET news website.  Additional information on the accessibility of the iPhone and iPad can be found in the digital technology of the Media Access Australia website.
