Review of a Panasonic DMR-XW380 Hard Drive DVD Recorder

no

In November 2010, Media Access Australia was loaned a Panasonic DMR-XW380 Hard Drive DVD Recorder to review.  Chris Mikul and Ally Woodford reviewed the unit for its caption viewing and recording capabilities.

Set up

The Set Up was straightforward, relatively quick, presented no stumbling blocks and pre-empted the steps better than some other set ups we’ve experienced.

Once installed, we tested the caption font on a broadcast program.  The captions were found via the STTL button and the font was acceptable; we’ve seen better but we’ve also seen worse.

Netflix supports captions on games consoles

no

Following on from April’s roll out of closed captioning on its streaming of movies and TV shows, leading Internet subscription service Netflix has released software for the Playstation 3 that will allow customers to watch a program with captions without inserting a separate instant streaming disk.

This new service, released in Canada then the USA recently, also includes a streamlined user interface, selected titles in 1080p and the addition of 5.1 surround sound.

These features will also start rolling out to other devices over time, including the Xbox 360, which will be issuing an Xbox Live update soon. The question remains though: now that Netflix will have multiple audio tracks for certain movies, does this mean they might eventually have audio description as well?

Netflix is only available in the USA and Canada.

Hindi and English audio described DVD

no

Back in February 2010, Media Access Australia reported on the world’s first Bollywood movie to screen with Hindi audio description (AD). That movie has arrived in its DVD format in Australia.

My Name is Khan was the world’s first Bollywood movie to be screened at the cinema with AD in both English and Hindi. The premiere of the movie 19 February 2010 was the result of a special project undertaken by the Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB) investigating the market for audio description for Bollywood movies. The DVD is also captioned.
