National home entertainment video store Civic Video has begun a new online service to promote accessible DVDs.

Instigated by audio described DVD fan Jeff Parker, Civic Video realised that promoting audio described and captioned DVDs made perfect sense.  By promoting accessible product on its website and providing a database of accessible titles to each store location, Civic Video can reach more DVD fans who may otherwise find it difficult to recognise accessible movies.

At this point in time, the website and database will cater for each month’s top 10 movies.

Jeff Parker explained his decision to approach Civic Video.  “The reason I contacted Civic Video about their website is because I thought it would be easier for people who are blind or vision impaired to access the website rather than having to wait until someone was available to take them to the store.  The Civic Video website is really accessible for screen readers and is extremely easy to use, which is why I thought it would be easier and faster if Civic Video could identify which movie has audio description."

Civic Video has adopted the easily identified audio description and captioning logos, as used by DVD distributors.

Civic Video General Manager Rod Laycock said, “We are glad to hear that our customers value this service, and that we could be of assistance in enhancing their enjoyment of movies.”
