The new Amazon Kindle e-book reader has been released for pre-order in the United States and has a number of improved accessibility features including spoken menus and a better level of contrast.

It's also significantly smaller and 15% lighter to assist people with mobility impairment.

The new features complement the text-to-speech functionality of the older model of Kindle, meaning that people who are blind or vision impaired can now navigate and have e-books read out to them. There are, however, still issues remaining with whether or not books are enabled to use the text-to-speech features.

The entry-level model of the new Kindle will be released on 27 August 2010 and cost US$139 (AU$155).
