The Equal Access to the 21st Century Communications Act has been approved by the Senate Commerce Committee and is intended to be put to the full Senate during this legislative session.
The bill will increase the availability of mobile devices that are compatible with assistive technology, as well as imposing closed captioning rules on online video.
According to an article in CedMagazine, the Consumer Electronics Association considers the move unnecessary. However the National Cable and Telecommunications Association is working with the bill’s sponsors to guarantee practical solutions.
NCTA President and CEO Kyle McSlarrow said, “Today's action by Chairman Rockefeller and members of the Senate Commerce Committee significantly advances our shared goal of improving the accessibility of communications services and equipment in the 21st Century.”
