Audiobook encourages blind and vision impaired seniors to get online

In July, Media Access Australia, in partnership with Council on The Ageing Western Australia (COTA WA) and funded by the nib foundation, released a kit to assist seniors with disabilities participate online. This has now been provided as an audio book, catering specifically to the needs of those who are blind or vision impaired.

The Helping seniors with disabilities get online kit has been distributed to COTA WA member organisations across the state. The resource equips organisations with the knowledge to run workshops for older people who have a disability or may be experiencing a decrease in sight, hearing or mobility.

Dell and Microsoft create program for accessible classrooms

A new collaborative effort by Microsoft and Dell has introduced an education program in the U.S. that will provide training and support to teachers of students with disabilities.

The program will help them incorporate and promote the use of assistive technologies and software features in classrooms for students who are blind or vision impaired or have a cognitive disability.

Siri update boosts accessibility on iOS devices

The update to Apple’s operating system iOS 6 announced today will provide a boost to the accessibility of Apple’s mobile devices such as the iPhone and iPad. 

Improvements made to its voice activation software Siri, which will now also be included on the iPad tablet, will increase the accessibility of apps, particularly those with geolocation features.

One of the biggest announcements made today is the introduction of Apple’s own Maps service. The Maps app will now replace the Google Maps app as the primary maps service on all iDevices and will have integration with Siri.

Accessible movie goers asked for feedback

In a bid to gain feedback from movie goers, Media Access Australia has today launched an online questionnaire which will provide industry with information on technical issues that everyday cinema patrons encounter with closed captioning and audio description devices used in accessible cinemas in Australia. 

The questionnaire can be filled out multiple times by people who attend these cinemas and experience technical problems with the equipment, which provides access to movies for Deaf, hearing impaired, blind and vision impaired patrons.
