In 2013 people with disability have been offered more choice in smartphones and tablet computers. While Apple still dominates this market, this year saw its competitors offer affordable and accessible alternatives. Here, Media Access Australia looks at a selection of mainstream electronic devices and how they have been improved for accessibility.

Access All Areas Film Festival announces 2013 feature program

Now in its sixth year, the free Access All Areas Film Festival celebrates how the joy of cinema can be opened up to everyone regardless of disability. The festival takes movies with open captions and audio description on the road throughout Australia.

The annual film festival is divided into three sections: the cinema tour, schools tour and community tour. Program details for the schools and community tours will be announced shortly but will include ten short, family friendly films.

Internet use higher among people with a disability in UK

More people with a disability are using the internet more frequently for social networking and job seeking than people without a disability, according to a report released by UK communications regulator Ofcom.

The report titled Disabled consumer’s ownership of communications services (PDF 530 KB) looks at how those with hearing, vision, mobility or multiple impairments use communications services and the internet.

Accessibility celebrated at game developer awards

The development of games designed to include people with disabilities will be recognised at this year’s Australian Game Developers Awards with the introduction of the Accessibility Award.

Presented at the Game Connect Asia Pacific (GCAP) conference, the awards recognise excellence and innovation in games developed in Australia. For the first time, they have added accessibility as an award category. According to the conference website, accessibility is defined as “mainstream games that make an effort to avoid unnecessarily excluding people with motor, cognitive, hearing speech or vision impairments.”
