Installing Android apps for accessibility is now easier

You can now download new text-to-speech voices and carrier specific Accessibility Application Installers from the Android app store, making it easier to get accessibility apps on your Android smartphone.

The Accessibility Application Installers will identify which accessibility applications are not installed on your Android smartphone and assist you to install the missing applications.

These apps include Accessibility Preference, Eyes Free Shell, IDEAL Item Identifier, IDEAL magnifier, IDEAL Web Access Pack, K-9 Mail, KickBack, Rock Lock, Sound Back, TalkBack, Talking Dialer, Walky Talky and Intersection Explorer.

US communications regulator proposes new access rules

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) will hold an open meeting on 3 March to consider Notices of Proposed Rulemaking (NPRMs) on two proposals of the 21st Century Communications and Video Accessibility Act.

These are:

  • The proposal to require providers of advanced communications services and manufacturers of equipment used for those services to make products accessible for people with disabilities.
  • The proposal to reinstate the FCC’s rules for video description (called audio description in Australia).

The 21st Century Communications and Video Accessibility Act, a comprehensive set of proposals to make electronic and online media accessible, was signed into law by President Obama on 8 October 2010.

New captioned cinema location in Melbourne

Hoyts at Forest Hill in Melbourne’s eastern suburbs will be the next major cinema to offer closed captioned sessions as part of the Cinema Access Implementation Plan.

With sessions commencing 17 February using the new CaptiView system, Hoyts, Forest Hill will be the first Victorian location to screen closed captioned films.
