Adobe Creative Suite 5 updates Dreamweaver accessibility

no

Adobe released Adobe Creative Suite 5 today and with it comes a new version of Adobe Dreamweaver, CS5, that includes new features to assist with creating accessible websites such as integrated support for content management system frameworks, full integration with Adobe BrowserLab that lets you examine your website in different web browsers  and even easier set-up of new websites.

One of the main improvements to Adobe Dreamweaver CS5 is better support for PHP-based content management system (CMS) frameworks such as WordPress, Joomla! and Drupal. These CMS frameworks allow you to build dynamic web sites, and they are often extremely popular with individuals or community-based sites – in fact, the Media Access Australia web site is built with Joomla!

Draft National Curriculum offers chance to champion access

no

Educators, parents, students and the general public are reminded that comments and feedback for the draft National Curriculum from Kindergarten to Year 10 will be closing on 23 May 2010. The feedback mechanisms allow for extensive feedback across all syllabuses and it is recommended that individuals register and work through the process over a period of time. Media Access Australia encourages all to consider the proposed curriculum in regard to statements on access and equity.

The Public Information Forum in Sydney was held last Thursday, 25 March, and comprised a diverse group of educators representing various concerns with the Draft National Curriculum. The Australian Curriculum Assessment Reporting Authority (ACARA) Chair Barry McGraw and General Manager Robert Randall said that ACARA would be taking feedback very seriously in refining the curriculum, and encouraged people to do so through the online feedback forms. This is an opportune moment to push towards accessibility for students with sensory impairment.

Adobe plans major upgrades to accessibility support in Flash Player

no

Adobe has announced that future upgrades to accessibility support in Adobe Flash Player will enhance accessibility across the three major operating systems: Windows, Mac and Linux. Mac users will particularly benefit from this upgrade, which will result in the ability to access Flash content using VoiceOver, Apple’s inbuilt text-to-speech application.

In a blog post, Andrew Kirkpatrick, Senior Product Manager for Accessibility at Adobe Systems, states that, “[t]he Flash Player will employ IAccessible2 from the Linux Foundation and the WAI-ARIA specification from the W3C to address user and developer needs and to ease interoperability with assistive technology vendors.”

Upgrades are expected to start with the next major release of Adobe Flash Player (following Flash Player 10.1).
