Our information on screen readers has been updated to help you find the one that best suits your needs.

Screen readers are pieces of software which enable people who are blind to use computers, smartphones and tablets. They work by converting text and other information into synthetic speech. There are many different screen readers available. Some come installed already on devices, others are free to download, while some are costly.

Our updated resources compare the most common screen readers used on desktop computers, including JAWS, VoiceOver and NVDA. This information is designed for people who are new to screen readers, or computer use in general. It should also be useful for those thinking of switching screen readers, or deciding on a new computer.

For those who are vision impaired, or find that their sight is getting worse as they get older, there are screen magnifiers which enlarge what appears on the screen to make it easier to see.

Our Digital Technology team is committed to providing up-to-date impartial information on the assistive technologies available in Australia. There are many updates to come.
